Fused Glass Ideas for Beginners

Fused Glass Ideas Every Glass Artists Starts With

Fused glass is a beautiful and versatile medium that can be used to create a wide range of beautiful and unique pieces of art. If you are a beginner in the world of fused glass, it is best to have some projects in mind when purchasing your glass. Here are some great and easy ideas for beginners in fused glass.

Jewelry

One of the most popular items to make with fused glass is jewelry. This is a great place to start if you are a beginner. Fused glass pendants, earrings, and rings make for stunning and unique pieces that are sure to impress. You can use a variety of colors and techniques to create beautiful and one-of-a-kind jewelry items. It is also much more fiscal. As everyone who loves glass art knows, glass is expensive. The price goes up yearly or even twice a year. Jewelry is small, and so you can use smaller less expensive pieces of glass to learn schedules and your kiln. It also gives you some grace if you make something you absolutely hate.

These are 2 of the first pendants I ever made. The blue one is just two pieces of glass, stacked and fully fused. The dragonfly one was my first try at using gold decals.

Useful Items around the House

Another popular use for fused glass is for creating functional items for your home. Fused glass dishes, coasters, and trivets are not only beautiful to look at, but they're also practical and durable. You can create a matching set of plates or drink coasters. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different colors and techniques to create a unique and eclectic look. I have often used coasters as birthday or anniversary gifts for friends and relatives. Many of them were thrilled to receive a handmade gift.

The above coasters are basically two pieces of glass with powdered frit applied with a stencil.

Unique Decorations made of Fused Glass

Decorative items like suncatchers and ornaments are also popular projects for fused glass. Suncatchers can be hung in windows to add color and beauty to any room, while ornaments can be hung on a Christmas, Easter or Halloween tree or displayed year-round. You can create a wide range of designs and styles for these items, making them a great way to express your creativity. One thing to remember though is to use chain or beading wire to hang your suncatchers. Many glass artists have been disappointed to find their precious work broken on the ground, due to fishing line that lost its integrity in the sun.

I don't create many windchimes anymore but I do create Christmas Ornaments still. They can be found here on my site: Christmas Ornaments

Fused Glass Sunflower windchimes

These windchimes I made and then cut and refired with my glass saw. It was a real challenge for me as a beginner glass artist.

Fused Glass Angry Birds Ornaments

These ornaments were all the rage one year. They took me a very long time to cut as the pieces were small and I was just learning how. I did a lot of grinding on these pieces.

Just give Glass Fusing a Try!

In conclusion, there are many different things that you can make with fused glass. Whether you're interested in creating functional items like dishes and coasters, or decorative pieces like suncatchers and ornaments, fused glass is a versatile and rewarding medium to work with. As a beginner, almost every glass artist started their hobby or career with a pair of earrings or a pendant. So why not give it a try and see what beautiful creations you can come up with!
